The Roman outpost of Turin (Augusta Taurinorum at that time, now Torino in Italian) founded in the first century BC has seen a dramatic change since the Dukedom of Savoy moved its capital from Chambery in 1563 and started to transform the town into a city. Over time, Turin acquired extensions to its “city print” that included new Baroque buildings and royal residences erected in the nearby countryside.
Turin was also the first capital of Italy in 1861 and it was here that some brilliant politicians, with the endorsement of the King of Savoy, helped to unify the country and liberate it from Austrian, French and Spanish dominations.
Two itineraries, each on foot and by van, offer the opportunity to visit two UNESCO sites not only in Turin, but also in the nearby areas of Le Langhe and Monferrato.
Agriturismi (“farm stays”, often family-run, that combine agriculture and tourism), local cheese and wine makers, truffles (starting in October), and the culture of Slow Food are highlights of these journeys through Roman towns and tranquil countryside. Look forward as well to one of the widest varieties of Italian recipes given the proximity of France and its strong culinary influence.
On one of our special departures, learn firsthand about Slow Food by attending two days of the biennial Salone del Gusto & Terra Madre in Turin where you may meet enthusiastic food lovers, artisans and farmers from all over the world.
